After completing his PhD in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Henrique Toma (University of São Paulo) Formiga started his independent career at the State University of Rio de Janeiro in 2006 at the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry. In 2009, he moved to Campinas to join the Department of Inorganic Chemistry where he is working since then. He occupied several administrative and representative positions at the university, the last one as vice-head of the external cooperation committe of the institute (2022-2023).

Prof. Formiga teaches Coordination Chemistry and Computational Coordination Chemistry for undergraduate (Chemistry and Engineering) and graduate students since 2006.
He supervised the scientific training of more than 70 alumni and acted as an invited lecturer in several Brazilian universities, at the University of Leuven, Belgium, and as visiting faculty at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA.
